Scholarship for Graduate Studies in Hydrogeology

Purpose of Scholarship

To encourage students to pursue studies in hydrogeology by providing financial assistance to Ph.D. students enrolled in Canadian universities.

Value

A single scholarship valued at $5,000 will be awarded each year.

Eligibility

To be eligible for this scholarship the student must:

  • Be registered full time in a Ph.D. program in good standing at a Canadian university. International visiting students or students co-supervised by a Canadian professor but registered full-time at an international university are ineligible;
  • Have completed at least two years of the Ph.D. program, and not exceeded 4 years of continuous registration. For accelerated Ph.D. students, the first year as a M.Sc. student does not contribute to the mandatory two year requirement;
  • Not be graduating for at least the two semesters following the award;
  • Not be a prior recipient of this scholarship.

Selection Criteria

Applications received by midnight November 15 will be evaluated by a jury composed of three Canadian hydrogeologists selected by the President of the IAH-CNC, but not including the President. The jury will assess the applications based on the following criteria:

  • Overall quality of scholarly activity, including any publications (refereed journal papers, conference papers, reports related directly to the research), conference presentations (oral and poster), and other evidence of scientific impact (50%);
  • Overall novelty and expected impact of the research, as outlined in the research statement, demonstrating a clear focus on hydrogeology (30%);
  • Evidence of engagement in the hydrogeological profession (e.g. conference participation, membership in professional associations, outreach activities) (20%).

Application

The student must submit an application to the President of the IAH-CNC by midnight November 15. A complete application includes the following:

  • The full name and contact details (address, phone, e-mail) of the applicant;
  • The University, Department and course of study in which the applicant is enrolled and the name of the student's senior academic supervisor
  • Transcripts for the years engaged in the Ph.D. program prior to this application;
  • A declaration that the applicant meets all eligibility criteria;
  • A 1-2 page curriculum vitae (résumé) listing academic credentials with institutions, scholarly contributions, and evidence of engagement with the hydrogeological community;
  • A one-page maximum (single line spacing) research statement describing the novelty and expected impact of the research;
  • One recommendation letter from a scientist or engineer who can attest to the quality of the student's studies and research.

Applications should be submitted by e-mail or letter to:
